December 17th - a rescue plan

Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.

I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)

One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.

More info over the days to come.

The plan is, broadly:

1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there

2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.

3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.

4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.

Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.

There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.

The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons - maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.

If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.

Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.

(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site - that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)

If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.

If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.

(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)

If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.

Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.

Oh I so hope this works. It would be great to get this out so we can try to get as many people as possible all back in one place and not split up all over different platforms.

Please reblog

Here’s hoping

everyone who see’s this from Me PLEASE reblog this!

Saving posts…

workiebach:

In light of the uncertainty about what might happen to some blogs after 17 December I thought I’d try to use Tumblr’s “export blog”, but after running for ages it didn’t do anything as far as I could tell. So I thought I’d try to download the posts instead using an app.

The one that seems to be easiest to use and worked for me was TumblRipper. Depending on the number and type of posts you have (photos, videos text etc), it does take some time and will use up lots of space on your computer (if that’s where you save it to), but at least you can keep a copy of what you have collected on your blog if you want to.

Alternatives to Tumblr if Yahoo goes any further

arubbishmedic:

bollymusings:

nickthenerd:

  1. Soup.io - well-known alternative to Tumblr. Reblogging, post types, themes, collab blogs, dashboard, artsy, great community already there. Soup can auto-import everything you’ve posted on Tumblr.
  2. TypePad - Includes reblogging. Dashboard and post types similar to Tumblr.
  3. Jux - Artful posts, beautiful blogging experience

Reblogging cause one day it just may be neccessary.

It became necessary

A message to my friends, fans, and followers about the upcoming Tumblr policy change.

To all my friends, fans, and followers:

First and foremost, thank each and every one of your for your enthusiastic support for my various Tumblr blogs [@GearLocker (February 2012 launch), @BeardedBootedBros (June 2015 launch), and @FrogmentUnited (April 2017 launch)]. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing original content and re-blogging others’ content that speaks to my various and wide-reaching fetish interests. It’s also been a fantastic forum for meeting and connecting with others who share some or most of those various fetishes. I can honestly say that I’ve met some awesome individuals via this platform, and though we may never have met in person (yet), these digitally-born relationships have become a very important part of my gear fetish community. Regardless of what happens with this social media platform, I know that the connections I’ve made with you will endure and continue beyond the familiar blue frame.

It goes without saying that I am outraged at this new policy, as it smacks 100% (or more) of censorship and signals (to me) yet another example of the current political climate (primarily in the United Sates but also being witnessed around the globe) of suppressing any kind of expression that does not fit a white, male, heterosexual, cis-gender, christian (small “c” intended) view of the world. As a student and scholar of history and literature, I am reminded of the latter years of the Weimar Republic. Don’t think for a nanosecond that this isn’t a similar wave that we’re experiencing both in the United States and in other countries around the globe.

I don’t know what the fate of my three blogs will be in this new post-December 17, 2018 era. Editorially, 99.99% of my content is, has, and will continue to be free of genitalia, sex acts, and other depictions of what this new policy would deem as “unacceptable” (a term that I find highly subjective). But seeing some examples from some other gear bloggers of content that has been flagged as “questionable” or “inappropriate” — i.e. fully geared men in hazmat suits and gas masks, with nothing exposed — gives me great pause. I truly hope that my three blogs will be around and will survive the cut, but in solidarity with my other gear community brothers, I will soon look for another platform where we can share freely photos and experiences of the things that make us tick, make us human, and make us unique. Let Tumblr become another site where midwestern crafters can post pictures of kittens and unicorns farting rainbow dust. They (the bozos at Tumblr) will soon see a dramatic decline in subscriptions and users.

I have amassed an incredible amount of content over the years across these various blogs — as of today, Tuesday, December 4, 2018: 16,893 on GearLocker; 2,012 on BeardedBootedBros; and 2,291 on FrogmenUnited. I don’t think I’ll be able to save or archive any of this content, so I’ll give it up to the gear gods in the sky if these blogs get flagged and deleted.

Gear brothers, I stand with you in solidarity against this ridiculous and completely cowardice move by Tumblr. I won’t be surprised if other platforms will soon start to see their decline —  and I’d be happy if Twitter were the next to fall, and fall hard. (I’ve always hated that platform anyway). We all know Facebook is under fire and intense scrutiny (as it should be), and I wouldn’t hesitate for a second that others will start to implement similar policies and experience similar reactions.

Let’s see if our petitions and collective voices can reverse this idiotic decision. We’re starting to see coverage of this policy in the mainstream media (New York Magazine, the publication that, like Tumblr, calls home, and Forbes). I imagine that in the coming days this will become a PR nightmare for them (Tumblr/Verizon) and will soon cause many of the bozos in charge to recant, re-evaluate, and (hopefully) resign.

Peace out, gear brothers. Stay tuned for an update from me on where to find me next.

Yours in gear,
@GearLocker, @BeardedBootedBros, @FrogmenUnited

Dear friends and followers,

It’s been a helluva ride on here. I’ve made fantastic new friends, found fantastic content, and even gained new dive buddies, like @rubberscotty@nhs2014ffmdiver and @vikingrubberdrysuitdiver.

Not sure what’s going to happen with tumblr after December 17th. Figured I’d make an alternative channel to keep in touch with my friends and followers either way.

You can find me on @underthedrysuit on twitter. I just started it so not much content yet. But feel free to reach out to me on there too.

Thanks for communicating your whereabouts before submerging. It seems we’re all going to be looking out for dive flags and the tell-tale bubbles as more TUMBLR users prepare to go under.
